Large Scale Woodcut on MDF: A PrintAustin Steamroller Event

Taught by Alfonso Huerta and in collaboration with Flatbed Press, this workshop will teach participants the fundamentals of large format woodcuts. Using cabinetry grade MDF, Huerta will cover the fundamentals of relief imagery: what elements make the most successful graphic relief image, how to transfer your image to your block, how to hand print with precise registration, and how to care for tools. Relief woodcut is a great introduction to printmaking! Participants will have time to practice their skills on a 6″ x 9″ MDF block before they jump to their larger block. This workshop is in preparation for PrintAustin’s steamroller event that will be held on February 3rd, 2024 in the street outside the Georgetown Art Center.

Workshop price includes ink for the workshop, brayers, barens, a 6×9 test block, and carving tools (for the class only, students will need to get their own carving tools in order to finish their larger block outside of the workshop).

**Student must supply their own cabinetry grade MDF board for the steam roller event, (sized 24″ x 30″ x 1/2″ thick) as well as carving tools to finish the larger block outside of the workshop in preparation for the steamroller event. A good carving tool set for beginners can be fount at this link.

Cost for 2 full workshop days: $230 and includes the fee to participate in the Steamroller event; Space is limited to 10 participants, so this workshop will fill up quickly! Age limit is 18+.
